What we do

Workshops

Meetups designed around learning a specific skill or discipline. Our workshops are specifically designed around community building for Muslim women artists. All skill levels are welcome, and non-artists, too!

Exhibitions

Our future goal is to help Muslim Women Artists take part in exhibitions under the MWAC umbrella. By applying collectively to exhibitions, we have a greater chance at representation.

Networking Events

Another future goal is to host networking events with artists in every field, connecting Muslim women artists together in order to build awareness and community.

What does MWAC believe in?

  • We want to see a world where Muslim women artists are fully recognized, empowered, and celebrated across all artistic disciplines. We want to help our artists contribute to a long history of Muslims as trendsetters in the arts.

    • Foster creativity: Provide a nurturing environment for Muslim women artists to explore and develop their artistic talents across various disciplines.

    • Promote representation: Amplify the voices and stories of Muslim women by showcasing their artwork in exhibitions, events, and digital platforms to reach broader audiences.

    • Encourage collaboration: Facilitate opportunities for members to collaborate, share resources, and support each other’s artistic journeys.

    • Engage with communities: Build bridges between our collective and the wider community through educational programs, workshops, and public art projects that celebrate cultural heritage and promote understanding.

    • Advocate for change: Use art as a powerful tool for social change, challenging misconceptions and advocating for the recognition of Muslim women in the arts.

Meet the Team

  • Founder

Originally from Ely, Minnesota, Emma has a passion for all things nature and art. Her mother, father, grandfather, grandmother, and uncle are all artists — so she didn’t really have a choice whether or not to be an artist when growing up. As a revert, she wondered why she didn’t know very many Muslim women artists (personally or in media), but somehow, they found her.

Her favorite mediums are are acrylic paint, brush pens, cyanotypes, and Adobe Photoshop.

The second revert of the bunch, Brooke also has a deep appreciation for the natural world and all things created by Allah (SWT). So much so that Brooke created her own clothing line, Sown of the Earth, that specializes in natural dyes and organic fibers. You can find Brooke at the many craft and art fairs in Minneapolis/Saint Paul selling her beautifully made garments ranging from abayas to skirts to vests.

Her favorite mediums are all things fiber.

Shafrin and Emma met while both working at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, when Emma, then a revert, asked “Wait, are you Muslim?!” and Shafrin answered, “Duh!”. Originally from Bangladesh, Shafrin is an accomplished artist with various exhibitions in both Minnesota and Bangladesh, as a professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, as well as the founder of a successful sock company that specializes in traditional Bangladeshi patterns fused with modern tastes.

Her favorite mediums are 2D animation, illustration, songwriting, and watercolor painting.
